India Travel

  1. When adopting from India, your child will travel to the United States after adoption in India (HAMA), or under a guardianship (GWA).
  2. Adopting parents must travel as escorting is not permitted by India, and you will make arrangements for your travel to & from, and within India. We can assist you with travel planning & we have an assistant & drivers that can help you as well.
  3. Parents must have a passport and obtain a visa to travel to India. You can apply for the visa at the Indian Embassy or Consulate that is designated for your state. Your FTIA coordinator will work with you to obtain your visa(s) at the appropriate time in the adoption process.
  4. After your case clears court, you will need to make sure you are familiar with our "India In-Country Process & Travel Guide", which is an extensive guide that will help you to understand the remaining steps in the India process and to help prepare you for your trip. The India In-Country Process & Travel Guide can be found on My FTIA, the online resource center for our families.
  5. Time in-country is typically from 5-8 business days, and only one parent needs to travel. **If only one parent plans to travel, please make sure your coordinator is aware of this so that she can review additional documentation that you will need prior to your trip.
