Written by Inessa ShiryaevaWe are proud to announce that FTIA has started a new program this year – the adoption program from Ukraine. FTIA has been officially registered with National Adoption Center of the Ministry of Education, the Ukraine adoption authority. Many adoptions have been done in Ukraine for many years. The children available for international adoptions are 14 months of age and older, toddlers and older children are available. Siblings may be adopted at the same time if you are willing to adopt two children. Four to seven months after we receive your dossier, you should receive an invitation from the National Adoption Center to travel to Ukraine and meet a child. The trip is on the average 21 to 35 days (3 to 4 weeks). If married, both parents must travel. On occasion, if 30 day appeal period is not waived by judge, then travel becomes two shorter trips with first trip approximately 10 – 14 days and second trip approximately 5-8 days. Currently we have a few families working on the completion of their dossiers. We hope to have one of the dossiers submitted to the Ukrainian adoption officials shortly. The Ukrainian adoption authority is in the process of being transferred from the Ukrainian Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Family, Youth and Sports. The current National Adoption Center is continuing to accept new dossiers from American and other families at this time. The U.S. Government has urged the Government of Ukraine to allow pending adoptions to be completed during this transition period, and to implement planned changes as quickly as possible to minimize disruption to intercountry adoptions. The Department of State has been discussing and will continue to engage the Government of Ukraine on this issue and provide updates as new information becomes available. We will also monitor the situation and will keep our adoptive parents updated on any new developments. If you have any questions about Ukraine adoption, please do not hesitate to contact our Ukraine coordinator Inessa Shiryaeva.
