As many of you know by now, Vietnam and the United States signed an agreement on June 21st to again allow U.S. citizens to adopt from Vietnam.  On June 23rd I was on my way to Vietnam to establish our Vietnam program.  I have been to Vietnam several times the last couple of years working on building relationships so that when the agreement was signed FTIA would be in a good position to move forward.  FTIA will begin working in 2 or 3 northern provinces when the licensing procedures are complete.

Agencies can submit their applications to the International Adoption Department (IAD) in the  Department of Justice beginning September 1st.  According to regulation, it should take about 60 days to receive a license.  We will have our application ready September 1st.

Once licensed, agencies can start submitting families’ dossiers November 1st.  The big questions are, exactly how will the adoption process work, how much will it cost and how long will it take?  No one has all the answers yet because both the IAD and the U.S. have not as of this date published certain procedures or regulations.  We have a good idea of how things will work and FTIA has been posting updates on our HotNews page.  Please visit our HotNews page for the most current news.
