In light of the circumstances surrounding adoptions in many countries, it is important that we all do our part to keep all adoptions open. We would like to ask that all FTIA adoptive families participate in the Vietnam Child Rights Campaign.
The current Memorandum of Agreement between the United States and Vietnam will expire September 1, 2008. The Department of State (DOS) has demonstrated that it has no plan or intention to negotiate another Memorandum of Agreement with Vietnam before the current agreement expires. Without another Memorandum of Agreement in place by September 2nd, US adoptions will stop.
The Department of State and Citizenship & Immigration Services (CIS) have identified what they believe as undisputed corruption with some Vietnam adoptions. We all agree any instances of corruption are wrong and persons responsible should be held accountable and punished. Unfortunately, the DOS and CIS plan to stop all adoptions to prevent any possible corruption. The responsible action is to raise the standards of adoption service providers in Vietnam & to identify & prosecute those responsible for breaking any laws protecting children. This is what the Vietnam Child Rights Campaign is intended to do.
The Vietnam Child Rights Campaign has been developed to encourage/force the Department of State to negotiate another Memorandum of Agreement to be in place by September 2nd so that adoptions continue & we can continue our work benefitting children. We need your help.
The Joint Council on International Children’s Services (JCICS) has organized “A Child’s Right Campaign for Vietnam.” Below you will find a link to a letter from Tom DiFilipo, CEO of JCICS, introducing the campaign and a call to action with specific instructions on how you can help. Also on the link are Recommendations we are asking our elected officials to require the US Department of State to comply with. We urge all of our adopting and adoptive families to participate in this campaign regardless of your country of adoption to help protect the right of Vietnamese children, and ultimately to help all orphaned children find a permanent and loving family.
Thank you for your efforts,
Keith Wallace and the FTIA Team
