Cost to Adopt from Vietnam

1.

Agency Fee For Families Thru International Adoption, Inc.’s Services:

  1. $200 due with application, for review and counsel.
  2. $1,000 due with submission of Pre-Approval Packet.
  3. $1,800 due with submission of authenticated dossier.
  4. $2,800 due with acceptance of a referral.
$5,800

2.

Authentication Fee:                                                    approximately

After securing the documents to be included in your dossier, you will need to have the appropriate state seal and Vietnamese authentications placed on the documents.  These fees are paid directly to government offices.

$500

3.

Translation Fee:

All dossier documents must be translated into Vietnamese for submission to the Vietnamese International Adoption Department (IAD) of the Ministry of Justice.  This is paid to FTIA with submission of your dossier.

$400

4.

International Fee:

The international fee goes to pay FTIA operations in Vietnam. Approximately, 20% goes to FTIA Vietnam staff's salaries, approximately 15% to Vietnam office overhead (cost of renting office space, phone, utilities, internet, etc.), approximately 25% goes staff travel inside Vietnam (trips to the Provinces to visit orphanages and officials), and approximately 40% goes to donations and support to the orphanages. Because total amounts spent in each area depends on the number of adoptions completed each year, it is impossible to assign a specific dollar amount to each item.

Half of the international fee is payable upon a family's acceptance of a referral and the remaining half is due when a family's case receives the second IAD approval. The international fee is not refundable. If adopting more than one child, the international fee is determined on a case-by-case basis. (Note: On the rare occasion that there are major medical expenses of more than $500 after acceptance of a referral, these expenses are the responsibility of adoptive family, but family will be consulted. FTIA covers the first $500 of such medical expenses. It would be rare for medical expenses to be more than $500.)

$9,000

5.

Travel Expenses (one parent traveling):

Below is an estimate of expenses for traveling to Vietnam – the trip is estimated to be fourteen days. *

One parent traveling

Round trip airfare, food and lodging – a 10-14 day stay for one adult (approximately) $3,330
Vietnamese visa fee for the traveling parent $65
Transportation in Vietnam (depends on the province the child is from - approximately) $250

Estimated for one parent traveling

*Please note that as adoptions begin again in Vietnam, the earlier traveling families may experience a longer stay in Vietnam than two weeks, most likely because of slow processes at the provincial level and consular paperwork.  FTIA will try our best to shorten the length of travel.  Thus, please understand that cost may be higher accordingly.

$3,645

Airfare from Vietnam to U.S. for a child 2 years and under (approximately) (For older children the price of the plane ticket will be higher, approximately $700-$1,000) $150
  Passport Fee $12

  U. S. visa fee for your child at the American Consulate $400
U.S. visa medical fee & photos (approximately) $100

Total Approximate Cost (one parent traveling) $20,007

Total Approximate Cost (married couple traveling – additional $2,350 for second parent traveling)

$22,357

Other costs will include:

  1. Home study:  Generally, the cost will be between $1,000 and $2,000 depending on the agency you choose and your state of residence. It is possible that the costs for some states may exceed these amounts.
  2. CIS fees - $670 I-600A filing fee, plus $80 per adult for biometrics/fingerprinting.
  3. Post-Placement Reports – Vietnam requires post-placement reports once every six months for the first three years and then one report annually from the fourth year until the child is 18 years of age.  FTIA requires the first three reports (at 6, 12 and 18 months) to be prepared by a state-licensed home study agency and subsequent reports may be prepared by the adoptive parents.  The post-placement reports prepared by a home study agency generally vary in cost from $100 to $300 each.
  4. There may be additional costs after your adoption to register or readopt your child according to your state laws.  To learn about your state laws visit: Child Welfare Information Gateway - Summary of Laws Regarding International Adoption

*We want to remind you that these fees are approximate.  While Families Thru International Adoption's agency fee will not change during your adoption proceedings, all other costs are subject to change.  Based on our experience, we do not expect any substantial change.  The travel costs to and from Vietnam, and inside Vietnam, vary every trip depending on when you travel, the availability of hotels, etc. It is not expected that any of the other fees or expenses will be waived or reduced.
